St. Petersburg is a city in Pinellas County, Florida. Approximately 258,000 people call St. Petersburg home, making it the fifth largest city in the state. It is located on the western coast of Florida, between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Locals typically refer to the city simply as “St. Pete.”

A Brief History

St. Petersburg got its start when Detroit-resident John C. Williams purchased the land in 1875 and then played an integral role in bringing a railroad line to the area along with a man named Peter Demens. The city was officially incorporated in 1892. When it came time to name the city, Williams and Demens flipped a coin to determine who would have the honor of naming the budding town. Demens won the coin toss and decided to name the town after St. Petersburg in Russia, where he grew up.
